THE PROBLEM

NPS seeks to preserve natural and cultural resources across the United States to benefit and educate visitors. In 2021: NPS launches its official local search app, but user encounter that, information is hidden beneath multiple layers. Essential details  require extensive scrolling. Furthermore, there is no profile feature to synchronize preferences across devices or personalize the app for individual users.

THE SOLUTION

Rethink the information architecture of the NPS App for a faster, easier local search experience. Unify disconnected sections of the app with a persistent, all-encompassing tab bar. Allow for a more personal and customizable user experience to encourage exploration. Connect users to each other for a more informed and less isolating park going experience.

Empathy Interviews

We conducted a survey among regular National Park visitors and those currently planning trips to National Parks to identify challenges, frustrations, requirements, and preferences regarding the National Park Service app. The goal is to improve their trip planning experience and tackle specific issues highlighted through their feedback.

Key Questions

1.- How do you start planning a trip?
2.- Inspiration?Where do you book tickets / accommodations?
3.- Do you use a travel agency? If not, why?
4.- How do you plan for a hiking trip specifically?
5.- How important are national and state parks when planning a trip?6.- How do you feel when visiting a national park?
